The backdrop for The neighborhood also houses ASU, founded in 1867 by nine African Americans just two years after the emancipation proclamation which brought a formal end to the institution of American Slavery.

In 2015, Rashim McKinney founded Gibraltar in Montgomery, Alabama, to uplift and empower communities through people-focused and process-oriented economic development.
Growing up in Montgomery, Alabama, he experienced its rich historical and cultural legacy. He was raised and developed in the African American Church traditions and studied at St. Jude Educational Institute, a local luminary and National Historic Site, where he played football and served as student-body president.
An active student at Tuskegee University, Rashim served as student-body vice president and treasurer, an Air Force ROTC cadet, Executive Producer of TUTV, a member of the Gamma Epsilon chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc., and a graduate of the Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business.
After earning an undergraduate degree in Management Science, Rashim was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force through ROTC Detachment 015, home of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, established at Tuskegee Institute in 1919.
He would start his career at the Space and Missile Systems Center in Los Angeles, California. Over the next eight years, Rashim would embark across the globe on an invaluable journey of personal growth and professional development which laid the foundation that anchors Gibraltar’s vision and culture today.
